New Jersey schools revise cyber bullying policies
- Students are prohibited from using school or personal electronic equipment, including computers and cell phones, on school property for the purpose of harassing or bullying.
- The board can notify police in the case of cyber bullying that occurs off school property, even though the policy does not cover off school locations.
- Students who violate the policy can face suspension or expulsion.
The policy was amended in order to comply with state regulations, requiring the board to include more specific procedures regarding parental notification, as well as some other changes.
The state of New Jersey mandates every district to have an anti-bullying policy that includes cyber bullying, but does not impose a universal policy on districts. Legislation requiring every district to have an anti-bullying policy was passed in 2002 and amended In 2004 to include cyber bullying.
